The Sun Rises At Midnight
June 17th – July 8th 2017
This month we welcome Tyler Thrasher to the gallery for an exhibit in our main gallery space.
“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science.” Albert Einstein
Inside a glass dish of green liquid similar looking to Windex the skull of a domestic goat is soaking, only its horns exposed. Beneath the surface chemical reactions planned and unplanned combine to grow large aqua marine crystals attached to the skull. In another dish you see a black liquid resting quietly while a submerged sea shell is being conjoined with hundreds of jagged amethyst crystals. On the chalkboard a complex chemical formula is written alongside a sketch of a crouching woman balancing moon on her back. This might sound like the laboratory of a mad scientist, which it is, but, it’s also an art studio where science and art unite with beautiful results.
Tyler Thrasher is a self taught artist and scientist. His insatiable curiosity for the natural world and his strong artistic instincts create captivating and mysterious results. This exhibit features a selection of crystallized skeletal specimens alongside drawings.
“The Sun Rises at Midnight” is a show that is a little more personal than my others. The drawings and illustrations I’ll be displaying are all depictions and interpretations of my life events and upbringing, all told through an alchemy and esoteric theme. The title is in reference to an event that occurs when an individual sees the potential and change within themselves at their darkest moment, during ‘Albedo’ or the “Whitening Phase”. All of the illustrations touch on this theme, the crystallized objects are a result of that phase in my life and an embodiment of my moving forward, exploring myself and the resulting curiosity.” – Tyler Thrasher
