Blindspot Gallery is delighted to present a new solo project – titled “Kyuusekkin (love SOS)” – at this year’s ART021 Shanghai Contemporary Art Fair. Lai’s recent art practice has seen an evolution from featuring only oil paintings to integrating installations with videos and other mediums, where she deepens her research in manipulating the display methods, setting and atmosphere of the space, orchestrating the viewers’ encounter and entrance into her works. Lai is particularly fascinated by the image world, and her creative output has much to do with her daily life and the images she encounters in the quotidian. Through the merging of the perceptual, the memorial and the archival, she works to capture the emotional reactivity and nuanced texture of a certain era, a certain setting, and a certain moment. Lai’s most recent projects investigate the aesthetics and visual culture of the 1980s-90s, drawing inspiration and source materials from the film, television, advertisement, packaging and publication from that era.
