In the narrow passageway between infrared and ultraviolet the human eye perceives light. Shrouded in darkness, by wavelength and frequency is the luminescent glow of the ultraviolet spectrum.
Last Rites Gallery is pleased to present Ultraviolet, a 3-person exhibition showcasing new paintings by Zofia Bogusz, Rachael Bridge, and Nannette Cherry; curated by Donia Mohamed.
Nanette Cherry’s, aristocratic portraits gone psychedelic create an ominous and an almost unsettling mood. By reinterpreting Old Master works she seeks to evoke a visceral response while still retaining the grace and grandeur of the original work.
The narrative scenes of Rachael Bridge’s paintings capture viewers in an almost otherworldly realm featuring luminous figures in a melancholic atmosphere. Each delicately rendered painting is a deeply personal, and unique manifestation of the artist herself.
A seductive atmosphere of doom floods the compositions of Zofia Bogusz’s paintings. She uses the contrast of deep blacks and a vivid glow of color to highlight the intensity between her subjects and the universe at large. The presence of goat skulls suggests a reference to sacrificial scapegoats and underworld connections along with positive symbolism of spiritual ambition, vitality, and balance.
“While each artist has a unique vision they are connected through a palette of dark undertones and a presence of a luminescent glow,” says Donia.
The opening reception for Ultraviolet will be held at Last Rites Gallery 325 W 38th St #1, New York, NY 10018 on Friday, September 7th from 7 – 9 PM. This event is open to the public. All artists will be in attendance. The exhibition will be on view through September 29th, 2018. For inquiries, or to request a collector preview of the exhibition, please email [email protected]com.
