From July 10th through August 10th, BoxHeart Gallery presents John Shook : Diverse Medium, an exhibition of other-worldly creations that feature methodical and intricate displays of geometric patterns, alien characteristics, and futuristic designs in a wide array of media and technique, on exhibit in our main + 2nd floor galleries.
Shook, a Pittsburgh based artist, uses the knowledge he obtains from working with different media and applies it to all facets of his art. Skilled in painting, drawing, and sculpting, Shook's 2D artwork is created using graphite, acrylics, watercolor, charcoal, aerosol, pen and ink, colored pencil, block and screen printing inks, or digital graphics and his 3D artwork employs the use of water and oil based clay, epoxies, casting latex, cement, fiberglass, resin, plaster, stone, wood, or insulation foam. Shook's elaborate artwork is both mysterious and intriguing, capturing a truly unconventional and peculiar thought process from his mind's eye.
For example, "The Mushroom Project" (AKA, the gathering of the FunGuys) is a collection of wall sculptures created by Shook and painted by various artists from all over the United States to bring awareness and interest to the importance of fungus in nature and in spirit. Shook's collaborative and diverse spirit has also led to several notable projects, such as the creation of high-end, custom airbrushing projects for celebrities including; Justin Bieber, Carrie Underwood, and Jon Bon Jovi.
In 2014, Shook began live painting (traditional and body) and giving sculpture demonstrations at Alex Grey's CoSM (Chapel of Sacred Mirrors) in Wappingers Falls New York. Shook and his cousin, Richard Hower, have two permanent installation sculptures at CoSM: "Di-Vine Man" is an 11' tall sculpture made from wood and vines and "Star Gazer" is a 300-pound stone with a carved smiling face looking upward toward the sky.
For the past two years, Shook has also curated several community group exhibitions at the Venue of Merging Arts (VOMA) in Johnstown PA. He provides a range of artistic services, working to bring other artist's ideas into reality through painting and sculpting.
