C. Grimaldis Gallery is pleased to present Scrolls and Sheets, a solo exhibition of ceramic works by Carol Young. Young’s intricate sculptures are meticulously crafted to resemble curled, folded and piled sheets of parchment. The artist’s trompe-l’oeil replication of the lightness, weight, and fragility of paper confounds the viewer’s perception of material, triggering an awareness of sensation, shape and tactility. Young’s blank pages become a kind of tabula rasa upon which the contents of personal and collective archives might appear. These delicate, evocative works investigate subliminal memory, forgotten history, and that which has not yet been spoken or said. Young’s installations call to mind an ancient printed library, laden with hidden information yearning to be classified, renewed and studied.
Carol Young (b. Uruguay, 1952), has been living and working in Colombia since the 1980s. Young has received numerous honors and awards for her sculpture and has exhibited at galleries and museums internationally including The Museum of Modern Art, Colombia; Bonnefanten Museum, Maastricht; Bard Graduate Center Gallery, New York; Museo Conde Duque, Spain; and Caracas Museum of Contemporary Art, Venezuela.
The exhibition will be on view from September 15 - October 22, 2016, and will run concurrently with a presentation by photographer Rania Matar, Invisible Children. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, September 15 from 6-8pm.
