Caldwell Snyder Gallery presents an exhibition of recent paintings by Melissa Chandon & Matt Rogers. Please join us Friday, July 14 from 5 - 7 pm for a conversation with the artists with wine provided by Castellucci Napa Valley Winery.
Natives of the Sunshine State, Chandon and Rogers express their profound affection for the landscape through their expressive palettes and quintessential California themes. Drawing upon roadside vernacular, Chandon continues to probe classic American imagery with her exquisite sense of composition. “I am still captivated by the ideal of the holiday or vacation,” she notes. “Or perhaps it’s just simple pleasures that I relish. The simple row boat, the backyard pool, the tail-fin of a highly designed car from my parents’ generation.” In his more recent paintings, Rogers uses thick swaths of paint to create multi-colored palm trees against moody skies. Together, they offer a look at the diversity that makes California such a unique environment. A love of nature and an adventurous spirit infuses Rogers’ paintings.
Chandon has exhibited her work at the Center for Contemporary Art, Sacramento; the Richard L. Nelson Gallery at the University of California, Davis; and Art Santa Fe, among many others. In addition to corporate and notable private collections, her art is included in the Morris Graves Museum, Morgan Flagg Collection at the de Young Museum, San Francisco and the University of California, Davis’ Shields Library and Davis Medical Center.
Born in Oakland, Rogers studied at the San Francisco Art Institute and lives and works in St. Helena, California. He has shown his paintings in solo and group exhibitions in California and beyond.
