Rafael França - videos
In partnership with Jaqueline Martins Gallery, Casa Nova is pleased to announce the video exhibition from the Brazilian artist Rafael França (1957-1991).
Showcasing the works "After the deep sleep_Getting out", 1985 and "Insomnia", 1989 .
"One of the richest aspects of the work of Rafael França is his experimenting with creative alternatives for videographic fiction. But do not expect to find in his classic narrative videos, in the manner of a certain literature or a certain movie, they accustomed to some canonical models of fiction. Narratives are totally experimental, absolutely elliptical and discontinuous, exploring things like the dynamic contrast between very quick cuts and slow, whole sequences presented frame by frame (as if they were slide projections), with sectioned plans in full length of a sentence, out of focus, lack of synchronization between sound and image, dialogs presented from back to front, using different textures of color or black-and-white, and so on. "
These situations are clearly covered in the pieces presented. In the first video, "After a deep sleep," the fiction and the disorder created by the sequence of images creates an agonizing situation that surround the character portrayed. At the second "Insomnia" the playful narrative gives rise to questions about issues that dealt with the life of the artist in his later years; perhaps a preface to his world view to that he can produce - in the following years - his next work, "a prelude to an announced death", 1991 considered one of his greatest creations.
