Chamber to present “Of Cabinets and Curiosities” in celebration of two-year anniversary
Exhibition featuring cabinets and curios by nine designers to open on September 7th, 2016
NEW YORK, AUGUST 17 2016 – Chamber is pleased to announce the opening of Of Cabinets and Curiosities, in celebration of the gallery’s two-year anniversary. The exhibition will feature cabinets by nine designers chosen by Juan Garcia Mosqueda, each with an accompanying curio chosen by the designer. The concept and title self-reference Chamber’s overarching theme, that the gallery is a contemporary reliquary for unique objects.
Says Juan Garcia Mosqueda, founder of Chamber: “We could think of no better way to celebrate two years of Chamber than asking some of our favorite designers, many of whom have contributed to Chamber already, to present designs that capture the gallery’s personality so well. Chamber is, after all, a modern day cabinet of curiosities.”
Chen Chen and Kai Williams will present “Rhino Tower Shelf,” complemented by their acclaimed “Swell Vase,” while Fort Standard will exhibit their “Relief Stone Cabinet,” which made its debut earlier this year, as a display space for their own personal stone collections. With characteristic whimsy, Gaetano Pesce has contributed the “Mobile Verde” cabinet, a new work from 2015 that has never been exhibited before, together with the scale model from 1987 that inspired it. Kwangho Lee will showcase his modular bookshelves entitled “The Moment of Eclipse,” commissioned by Chamber in 2015, along with “This Boy’s Life,” a collection of Lee’s son Dohyeon’s personal objects. MOS Architects, who designed the interior of Chamber, will present the first piece in a new series called “Model Furniture,” inspired by the imperfect representations of furniture found in architectural renderings. Their curiosity will be a selection of new projects, such as quilts from “Low Resolution Quilt” collection and aluminum stools from the “Model Furniture” series.
Four cabinets from past Chamber Collections will be on view as well, integrating the curation of the previous two years into the current exhibition. From Chamber Collection #1, curated by Studio Job, Dirk Vander Kooij’s “Diffuser Cabinet” will be shown alongside with some drops from Vander Kooij’s 3D printing robot, Studio Job + Lensvelt’s “Job Office Dressoir” will be presented with Studio Job’s “Chimney Ashtray” and Nendo’s “Deep-Sea Bookcase” will display Nendo’s “Bottleware for Coca-Cola”. From Chamber Collection #2, curated by Andrew Zuckerman, “Walnut Frank” by Snickeriet + Karl-Johan Hjerling will showcase a new collection of wooden boxes, called “Deposit Boxes” designed by the studio for the exhibition.
Of Cabinets and Curiosities will be on view through October 15, 2016.
