COOPER & GORFER
In connection to the major solo exhibition of Cooper & Gorfer at Fotografiska opening in Spring 2017, CHRISTIAN LARSEN presents a number of large scale photographs previously not displayed from the artists recent book/exhibition Interruptions, focusing on the stories of Sámi women in the northern most region of Sweden, and from an entirely new project where the artists return to their previous work from Argentina that will be released at Fotografiska. Cooper & Gorfer’s new book – published by prestigious publisher of photo books Kehrer Verlag and distributed by Thames & Hudson – will also be presented at Market Art Fair.
Cooper & Gorfer are known for their striking photographic portraits that go far beyond mere documentation to tell and visually interpret stories of love, sorrow and origin in new and non-linear ways.
Cooper & Gorfer have exhibited extensively internationally and have also received several book design awards. In the Scandinavian countries recent shows include Kulturhuset Stockholm, Hasselblad Center, Dunkers kulturhus and the Danish Photography Museum.
Market Art Fair is a welcome opportunity for the gallery to make Cooper & Gorfer’s new works available to the audience of the Swedish art market, this is an exclusive opportunity as there will be no other public showing of the artworks for sale in Sweden for the next couple of years.
Cooper & Gorfer consists of Sarah Cooper (US, 1974) and Nina Gorfer, (Austria, 1979). They began their collaboration in 2006. They live and work in Gothenburg, Sweden and Berlin, Germany. The artist duo is known for their distinct painterly aesthetics. With their poetic hybrid image-collages, they challenge the medium of photography. Thematically, their work often revolves around issues of cultural identity.
