“The constant examination in paint of the physically present human subject over a lengthy period of time seems to open up a temporally stretched zone for the viewer in the complete work. A zone where something of the ‘poignancy of fact’, to quote Francis Bacon, is allowed to coagulate and congeal into something more than the sum of its parts. Accompanied by inanimate, aesthetically unsympathetic objects, the detritus of life encountered in the ritual that is my daily trip to and from the studio - old, abandoned furniture; discarded wood; transport pallets; dumped organic matter; plastic packaging; blue chemical barrels, they combine to form a symbiotic relationship suggestive of a pre- or postapocalyptic world. Operating in a largely instinctual way, I make, in trial and error, combinations of these objects and figures in paint until something sticks and feels right, something that points beyond the apparently obvious situation described, these objects become the sounding board for their private, ambiguous, inner states of mind.”
