Pop Art: ‘A Catalyst for Dreams,’ Abstraction and Figuration
Selected Works by Paul Feeley and John Wesley
On view from July 1 – July 31, 2016
SOUTHAMPTON, NY – Collective by Jeff Lincoln is pleased to present its first exhibition Pop Art: ‘A Catalyst for Dreams,’ Abstraction and Figuration, featuring a highly curated selection of works by American artists Paul Feeley and John Wesley, on view from July 1st through July 31st, 2016 at 200 North Sea Road, Southampton, New York.
Following a major career retrospective at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery last year, the show highlights four of Paul Feeley’s brightly colored, abstract works including master work, Petono, 1962, alongside important paintings such as Night Titanic, 1984 and Tour de France, 1974 by cult Californian artist John Wesley.
Both artists represent the breadth and vitality of the Pop Art movement, examining issues beyond the consumer culture favored by Warhol. A comic sensibility and a willingness to engage sexual issues and imagery unite their work. Feeley uses carefully crafted and exactingly rendered abstract imagery on unprimed canvases while Wesley employs his signature pastel palette and figurative subjects that fix “on the neurotic, erotically inclined psyche of the American male, with its rage and frustration, longing and loss,” according to New York Times critic Andrea K. Scott.
Donald Judd, a supporter of both artists throughout his lifetime, described the work as “a catalyst for dreams.”
