Jules Buck Jones - Portraits of an Invisible Predator

Known for his densely worked drawings, sculpture and videos, Austin-based multimedia artist Jules Buck Jones overlays imagery of wild and overgrown flora onto hidden, tightly rendered illustrations of wildlife…the unseen predators in a dense forest of line and color. In his studio practice he combines interests in evolutionary biology, mythology and ecology. This hybrid of the natural sciences and folklore create fictionalized ecosystems that lure the viewer to venture ever closer and further into the artist’s world.

Jules Buck Jones earned a B.F.A from Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA in 2005 and an M.F.A. in Painting at the University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX in 2009. He lives and works in Austin, Texas and is a founding member of the artist collaborative Boozefox and the non-profit artist run exhibition space MASS Gallery in Austin, TX. Exhibitions since 2009 include: The Blanton Museum of Art, Austin, TX (2012); the Austin Museum of Art, Austin, TX (2012); Champion Gallery, Austin, TX (2011); The Front, New Orleans, LA (2010) and Glave Kocen Gallery, Richmond, VA (2009.) Artists residencies since 2011 include; Vermont Studio Center, VT; the Skowhegan School for Painting and Sculpture, ME and The Lighthouse Works, Fisher’s Island, NY.
