Manifiesto Mexicano: La construcción del Arte Moderno a través del tiempo Modern art in Mexico was not merely an aesthetic revolution—it was an ideological project, a cultural affirmation, a mirror, and a manifesto. This exhibition offers both a panoramic and intimate view of the intricate network of artists, visual languages, and tensions that shaped modern Mexican art from the early 20th century through the late 1990s. At the heart of this exhibition lies the belief that art is, in itself, a historical construction. Here, the grand narratives of muralism—embodied by Siqueiros, Orozco, and Rivera as the voices of a revolutionary national epic—interweave with the introspective and symbolic explorations of Tamayo, Carrington, and Toledo, who expanded the boundaries of form, color, and the unconscious. Further on, we encounter essential ruptures: Goeritz’s geometric abstraction, Felguérez’s raw materiality, Ricardo Martínez’s reinvention of the figure, Friedeberg’s saturated irony, and Pedro Coronel’s cosmic world. Despite their differences, all of these artists engage with a shared question: how to represent a Mexico that is always multiple, contradictory, and in flux? Manifiesto Mexicano does not seek a linear or definitive reading. Rather, it proposes a space for wonder and critical reflection, where artworks speak across time and geography, and where viewers are invited to draw their own connections between history, form, and emotion. These artists form a constellation—a possible map of modern art in Mexico, marked by its legacies and challenges, its radical gestures, and its enduring relevance. More than an exhibition, this is an invitation to look at the past with open eyes—to understand that modern Mexican art was, and continues to be, a fertile ground for cultural construction and visual thought. A living work in our collective memory. Evelyn Sosa
