Hans J. Wegner
Exhibition 12 September – 18 October 2014
Dansk Møbelkunst Gallery is proud to present an exhibition celebrating the centenary of one of Denmark’s finest furniture architects, Hans J. Wegner.
The exhibition highlights Wegner as a unique character in the history of modern design. Wegner was extremely gifted and one of the most prolific designers of his time, diligent and extraordinarily hardworking. He had an eye for modern and timeless design, an innate talent for the craft and a refined sense of materials. His work covers a wide span – from the simple, elegant armchairs to the upholstered OX-chair and the spectacular design of the Halyard chair. It is this multi facetted genius that is the focus of the exhibition.
We will show a selection of Wegner’s most exquisite works, including his international breakthrough and most iconic piece, The Round Chair, designed in 1949. That the Americans named it “The Chair” says it all: It is the perfect example of a well-designed, elegant armchair. It is simple, comfortable and very well made; an example of outstanding craftsmanship. There is nothing superfluous about it, no unnecessary details - instead Wegner drew attention to the decorative features of fine cabinetmaking by accentuating the joints as beautiful zigzag patterns. He was one of the first to succeed with the vibrantly turned shaping of the back, giving the chair its expressive form.
Another highlight of the exhibition is The Valet Chair, one of Wegner’s more playful works, designed in 1953. With its hangers for both jacket and trousers and the triangular compartment under the tilting seat, the chair has become a highly sought after collector’s item. It is one of Wegner’s most organic and innovative pieces, testifying to his love of wood and the handicraft tradition. Wegner was one of the few Danish furniture designers capable of making his own furniture and his skills as a craftsman added to the superb quality of his designs. He had an instinctive feeling for the possibilities and limitations of the materials and his beautiful works last for generations.
The exhibition Hans J. Wegner opens with a reception Thursday 11 September from 6-9 PM and continues until 18 October 2014.
Opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday from 11-19.
