David Richard Gallery Showcases Five Young Artists From New York and Santa Fe Exploring Figuration in a Variety of Media in The Narrative Figure
The Narrative Figure
May 13 through June 25, 2016
Opening reception Friday, May 13, 2016 5:00 - 7:00 PM
The exhibition, The Narrative Figure, presents the talented young artists from New York and Santa Fe: Esteban Cabeza de Baca, Michael Dixon, Jeffrey Hargrave, Daisy Quezada, and Justice Whitaker, and their exploration of figuration in contemporary art using a variety of media and approaches to painting. Edgy, raw and confrontational describes the work of these artists coming from very disparate experiences. The approaches are different, but the message the same; visual differences aside, respect, humanity and dignity are essential.
The Narrative Figure will be presented May 13 through June 25, 2016 with an Opening Reception on Friday, May 13 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at David Richard Gallery, located at 1570 Pacheco Street, Suite A1, Santa Fe, NM 87505, phone: 505-983-9555.
The advent of modernism in the early 20th century is often presented as a linear progression towards abstraction, with figuration giving way to more conceptual and theoretical visual imagery, as exemplified by artists such as Mondrian, Kandinsky and Pollock. A cursory look, however, demonstrates that even artists considered markers of abstraction, moved in and out between conceptual and representational imagery. Picasso, Braque, Malevich, De Kooning and Philip Guston are artists who often blurred these lines of demarcation and provided points of reference for later artists.
“The mash-up of abstract and figurative imagery has allowed for a richer, broader visual tapestry, where compositional concerns intermingle with personal narratives, sometimes direct; other times implied”, says gallery co-director David Eichholtz.
Each of the artists included in The Narrative Figure approach this composition differently. Cabeza de Baca and Dixon begin with a formalist context, leaving the narrative or ‘story’ to subtly and slowly emerge. For Hargrave, Quezada and Whitaker, the methods and materials are a vehicle for presenting urgent, personal and social agendas.
About David Richard Gallery:
David Richard Gallery is located at 1570 Pacheco Street, Suite A1, Santa Fe, NM 87505, P: 505-983-9555. Since its inception the gallery has produced museum quality exhibitions that feature Post War abstraction in the US. The presentations have addressed specific decades and geographies as well as certain movements and tendencies. While the gallery has long been recognized as an important proponent of post-1960s abstraction—including both the influential pioneers as well as a younger generation of practitioners in this field— in keeping with this spirit of nurture and development the gallery presents established and very new artists who embrace more gestural and representational approaches to the making of art as well as young emerging artists.
In 2015 David Richard Gallery launched DR Projects to provide a platform for artists of all stripes—international, national, local, emerging and established—to present special solo projects or to participate in unique collaborations or thematic exhibitions. The goal is to offer a fresh look at contemporary art practice from a broad spectrum of artists and presentations.
