De Buck Gallery is pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition by New York based painter Sebastian Blanck. The exhibition, entitled Everyday, marks the artist’s debut at the gallery and will be on view from March 1 through April 2, 2016. An opening reception in the presence of the artist is scheduled for Thursday, March 3rd from 6-8 PM.
Sebastian Blanck’s exhibition provides an intimate glance at the artist’s day-to-day life – the paintings are populated by a collection of the important figures in his life; his wife, children and friends, in ordinary settings and occurrences. In an age defined, in many cases, by spectacle in many areas of our public lives – ranging from art to politics, Blanck’s focus on the charm of these simple moments and close relationships is refreshingly touching. For his primary inspiration, Blanck need look no further than his own life.
Using a collage technique that uses painted paper onto watercolor on paper, the immediacy of each portrait or scene as portrayed by Blanck reflects both his familiarity with the subject and an almost photographic sensibility of being “in the moment.” Subjects like a boy flying a kite, or a woman looking off in to the distance, though ephemeral in reality, are captured in time as snapshots by Blanck’s hand, imbued with a sense of affection impossible to convey through mechanical means.
Born in New Haven, CT in 1976, Blanck holds a BFA in Painting from the Rhode Island School of Design, and was selected as Visiting Artist at the American Academy in Rome in 2001. Widely recognized for his musical contributions in addition to his painting, Blanck has exhibited at galleries in the United States and Europe. His work has been reviewed in publications including New York Magazine, Artforum, Paper Magazine and The New Yorker. Sebastian Blanck currently lives and works in New York.
