Imagine a society where poetry, aesthetics and sensuality are prioritised above rationality and logic. Sisters Academy - The Boarding School is a large-scale total performance installation transforming Den Frie Centre of Contemporary Art into an experimental boarding school for a possible society of the future: The Sensuous Society.
We are immensely proud and excited to open the doors to an ambitious exhibition project when the performance group Sisters Hope take over Den Frie with their radical experiment. Everything – the galleries, offices, toilets and café – has been transformed by scenographic installations, sound and sound design to create Sisters Academy - The Boarding School. The format is unprecedented on the Danish art scene: a month-long, non-stop interactive exhibition in which visual art and dramaturgy fuse in a shared focus on sensuality and poetic existence.
More than 20 performers comprise the staff of Sisters Academy, where members of the audience can enrol as pupils for a minimum of 24 hours, during which they both eat and sleep at the school. During enrolment there is an initiation rite and participants are issued with school uniforms and have their phones and cameras confiscated. After this the pupils join daily life at the school, where they will meet teachers like The Mortal, The Gardener and The Untamed. Sisters Academy is located in The Sensuous Society, a potential world of the future that has emerged as a consequence of the current economic and environmental crisis: a society where everything is structured according to aesthetic and poetic values. The goal of Sisters Academy is to question contemporary society – not least the educational system – and our understanding of knowledge and its production with the goal of generating new visions for the organisation of society.
Sisters Hope’s artistic director Gry Worre Hallberg explains: "For us the project is activist in intent – that’s the basis for the performative work. But our activism is less about new ways to protest than about providing access to a more sensory and poetic way of experiencing the world”
The exhibition is supported by the Bikuben Foundation’s Vision Award for exhibition projects with a visionary concept and socially relevant potential, which in 2016 and was awarded jointly to Sisters Hope and Den Frie for the exhibition concept Sisters Academy - The Boarding School.
The number of pupils admitted to Sisters Academy is strictly limited to a maximum of 30, and the exhibition can only be experienced by visitors with a pre-booked ticket. There will be no admission or tickets on sale at the entrance to the exhibition.
