Trilateration

Miami, FL, March 12, 2016 - The Diana Lowenstein Gallery is pleased to present Trilateration: Andy Coolquitt, Tamar Ettun, Michael Loveland, a three-person exhibition curated by Ombretta Agró Andruff, Diana Lowenstein Gallery's curatorial advisor. French-born, New York-based Julien Gardair's paper cut-outs will be on view in the project space.
An opening reception will take place on Friday April 15th, 6:00-9:30PM.
The gallery will host a conversation with the artists and the curator prior to the opening reception, starting at 6:00PM
The exhibition will be on view through May 28th, 2016.
"In geometry, trilateration is the process of determining absolute or relative locations of points by measurement of distances, using the geometry of circles, spheres or triangles. Trilateration brings together the work of Austin-based Andy Coolquitt; Israeli-born and New York-based Tamar Ettun; andMiami-basedMichaelLoveland. Whiletheartistssharesimilaritiesintheirart-makingprocessandmodus operandi, the artworks featured in the show all have strong individual personalities that set them apart, and yet are able to engage in a fascinating dialogue amongst each other. The use of everyday objects and humble materials such as kitchen rubber gloves and utensils, scraps of fabric and house carpet, as well as street signs and commercial billboards, is the common denominator that inspired Trilateration, however each artist combines, dissects and reassembles urban and domestic debris in unique and distinctive ways to create the sculptures, videos, photographs and installations that inhabit Diana Lowenstein Gallery.
Coolquitt creates objects and installations as a means to highlight how humans relate to each other and to the spaces around them, how architecture, objects, and environment interact to manipulate space and dictate experience. Ettun, through her objects and performances addresses the space between: "davka (Hebrew for 'deliberately') and awkward: a purposeful, awkward art that attempts to question and recompose movement with sculpture in the absurdity of the everyday. By composing objects and movers Ettun creates a sense of what she calls a “handheld history". Loveland's paintings and sculptures are inspired by the aesthetics of grassroots PR, buffed graffiti tags to homemade political posters and hand painted business signs. Beginning with repurposed vinyl billboards and found graphics, Loveland obliterates the original image through processes of “painting out,” masking and erasure that changes the signage’s original meaning to another level of communication.

About the artists:
Andy Coolquitt was born in Texas in 1964, and currently lives in Austin. In March and April of 2015 Colquitt was artist-in- residence at Disjecta in Portland, Oregon; he also attended residencies at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas in 2014 and Fountainhead in Miami and at 21er Haus in Vienna, Austria in 2013. He has exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at Galerie Krinzinger in Vienna, Austria; the Blaffer Museum in Houston, Texas; AMOA-Arthouse in Austin, Texas; The Contemporary Austin, Texas; Thief Among Thieves, at The Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, Denver, Colorado; Burn these eyes captain, and throw them all in the sea! at Rodeo Gallery, Istanbul, Turkey; The problem today is not the other but the self, at The Goethe Institute - Ludlow 38, New York. His work is included in the collections of the Philbrook Museum of Art, the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere in Vienna, and the D. Daskalopous collection, amongst others. He is represented by Lisa Cooley in New York City.
Tamar Ettun, born in 1982 in Jerusalem, is a Brooklyn based sculptor and performance artist. She is the founder and director of The Moving Company. Ettun received her MFA from Yale University in 2010 where she was awarded the Alice English Kimball Fellowship. She studied at Cooper Union in 2007, while earning her BFA from Bezalel Academy. Her numerous exhibitions and performances include: The Watermill Center, Vanity Projects, e-flux, Transformer, NADA NYC, Madison Square Park, Braverman Gallery, Indianapolis Museum of Art, Andrea Meislin Gallery, PERFORMA 11, PERFORMA 09. Ettun has been honored by several organizations including Franklin Furnace, Iaspis, The Pollock Krasner, Fountainhead Residency, The Watermill Center, MacDowell Fellowship, Abrons Arts Center, The Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Art Production Fund, Socrates Sculpture Park, Artis, RECESS, and Triangle Arts Association. Ettun is currently working towards a solo show at the Upsala Museum of Art that will open in 2016. She is represented by Fridman Gallery in New York City.

Michael Loveland was born in 1973 in Miami, Florida, where he currently lives and works. He graduated from New World School of the Arts in Miami and earned his BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. He also studied and worked in New York for 7 years before returning to Miami. Loveland’s work has been exhibited in galleries, museums and art fairs in the United States and Europe including The Brooklyn Art Museum, Brooklyn, NY; The Perez Art Museum, Miami, FL; BFI, Miami, FL; Denise Bibro Fine Arts, New York, NY. His work is included in many private collections as well the Brooklyn Art Museum and the Perez Art Museum Miami collections. He is represented by Diana Lowenstein Gallery in Miami.

Julien Gardair was born in France in 1976, he lives and works in New York City. He works in a variety of media from painting to large-scale site-specific installations. His work has been shown frequently in galleries and museums since 1996 in France, Belgium, and the US. Amongst his solo and group shows: Martos Gallery, NYC; The Invisible Dog, Brooklyn, NY; Eden Rock gallery, St Barth; Galleries Nationales des Gobelins, Paris and Beauvais, France; Stevenson Union Gallery, South Oregon University, Ashland, OR; Theresa Bastion, Timisoara, Romania.
About the Gallery:
Since 1989, Diana Lowenstein has been part of the international art scene through her role as an active gallery owner and director, first under the name Der Brücke and later with Diana Lowenstein Gallery. She began her career as a gallerist in Argentina, fomenting young local artists as well as organizing exhibitions of world-renowned foreign artists. Her art savvy as well as her relations with European galleries, resulting from her beginnings as an avid art collector, made it possible to represent grand masters such as Wifredo Lam, Roberto Matta and Antoni Tapies. One-man shows of their works were made available to an art-hungry clientele in Buenos Aires.
For over twenty five years, Diana Lowenstein has been a fervid promoter of Argentine art at home and abroad. Participating in high-caliber art fairs like FIAC in Paris, ARCO in Madrid, Art Basel, Art Chicago and Art Miami has been a staple in the gallery's operation. Furthermore, Diana Lowenstein has been part of numerous organizing committees of these fairs, being able to influence their orientation to include a quality Latin American mix of talent.
In September 2000, Diana Lowenstein Fine Arts moved its gallery base to Miami, occupying a spacious warehouse just south of Coral Gables. In 2006 the gallery relocated to the Wynwood Art District in Miami, in a converted warehouse space at 2043 North Miami Avenue. The gallery represents over forty artists from around the globe. She has made it possible for many of her exclusive artists to exhibit works in major world museums and biennales.
