The artist created authentic works that aim to touch mankind via the nature, through the use of sea urchins and seaweed. Oeuvres presented in a conceptual integrity are using materials, such as rice paper, ceramics, photography, collage and fine art print.
Dirimart Nişantaşı opened the new season on September 21, featuring Melike Abasıyanık Kurtiç. One of the most prominent woman artists of Turkey, Melike Abasıyanık Kurtiç will be opening a solo show for the first time after a long while. For many years, the artist created authentic works that aim to touch mankind via the nature, through the use of sea urchins and seaweed; this focus is maintained in this exhibition. Another characteristic of the oeuvres presented in a conceptual integrity is that they are produced using materials that are not limited to ceramics, such as rice paper, and a wide range of techniques, including photography, collage and fine art print.
Melike Abasıyanık Kurtiç graduated from the Department of Decorative Arts, Fabric Pattern Design at Istanbul State Academy of Fine Arts in 1955. She worked on decoration and ceramics at the Mumhane Workshop of Eczacıbaşı Ceramics Plant between the years of 1960-62. Known mostly for her ceramics, Melike Abasıyanık Kurtiç opened her own workshop in 1963. Finding the ceramic technique closer to human nature due to its direct relation with soil, the artist started to produce artwork using other techniques like photography, illustration and videos in the course of time. After 1980, having concentrated on topics related to life and death in her works Melike Abasıyanık Kurtiç has won many national and international awards.
