A collaboration between photographer Asger Carlsen and artist Casey Spooner in anticipation of FISCHERSPOONER’s first new material since 2009 and premiering Carlsen’s stunning and provocative new work.
Asger Carlsen has trained his unique vision on a wide range of subjects throughout his career., with a focus on digital manipulation, figurative distortions, and hybrid silhouettes. Now, finding his muse in Casey Spooner, he has committed himself to exclusively photographing Spooner over the next year. Premiering at UNTITLED Miami Beach 2015, Asger Carlsen and DITTRICH & SCHLECHTRIEM will feature two new large-scale works from this current series.
Carlsen’s photography is featured prominently as the sole image on the book cover of EGOS. The book itself is segmented into two vastly different chapters.
The first chapter, “Egos” is bound and was shot over the course of two years with 25 different photographers including Carlsen himself. This chapter exhibits Casey as strong and masculine – his nude form as commentary of how we perceive the mature, gay man in our overexposed, social media addicted world. Attempting to take these pre-existing clichés and combat them by showcasing his own overexposed body as its antidote as well as its symbol.
The second chapter, “Apt. #3” takes an entirely different form. Constructed as a leporello, it folds out into large-scale photo spreads. The entirety of the second half takes place at Casey’s apartment and was shot exclusively by Yuki James and features additional characters who participate in the album as collaborators and artist in their own right. There is a powerful sense of expressiveness, humanity and emotion all framed through a stylized, cinematic lens.
EGOS presages FISCHERSPOONER’s new album of the same name.
