FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
East Wing presents at Art Dubai 15 – 18 March 2017
Booth B -12 / Contemporary
For Art Dubai 2017, East Wing will present two international projects that question the fine line between fact and fiction: Cédric Delsaux’s popular body of work, ‘Dark Lens’ and the artistic duo, Cortis & Sonderegger’s series, ‘Icons’.
Two unique pieces by French artist, Cédric Delsaux from his series ‘Dark Lens’ premiere at the fair, the work exposes an unsettling confluence of hyper-real cityscapes combined with a post-postmodern sense of humour, giving audiences an otherworldly vision of contemporary cities, specifically Dubai, in the form of two state of the art light boxes providing a new interpretation to his series of fantastical landscapes.
“My first intention wasn’t to produce a series on ‘Star Wars,’ but to photograph locations that are the makeup of our modernity: parking lots, peripheral zones, wastelands forgotten places, of both beauty and ugliness, common and mad… Nevertheless, something was missing; my images were flat, déjà vu. I then had the idea to add these sci-fi characters, with the immediate effect of making my primal sensations stand out, the fantastical nature of the characters invading the whole frame, both universes harmoniously coming together.”
Delsaux’s work continues to explore reality through fiction, in the form of new landscapes that push imagination and critical thinking to the outer limits.
Also on show by the Dubai based gallery will be the collaborative series by Jojakim Cortis and Adrian Sonderegger, ‘Icons’. A series of recreated iconic moments involving in-depth historical research combined with a sense of play. Re-staging important historical moments in detailed miniature, the artists step back and boldly reveal their working methods; exposing the 'backstage and making of’ aspects of their craft. By including the debris of their constructions (paint, glue, cotton wool, etc.), Cortis & Sonderegger present an image within an image – leaving the viewer unbalanced between the remake of the past and the artist’s studio environment of the present. Their aim is to look for ways to ‘outwit and question the documentary aspect’ of photography and raise questions in the minds of their audience about the temporal nature of experience and memory.
