FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
East Wing / Dubai makes its first appearance in the United States
26 - 29 January 2017 at PHOTOFAIRS | San Francisco.
For the inaugural edition, East Wing features US debut presentations by the Swiss-based duo, Cortis & Sonderegger and their series Icons, and a special installation of 'Phenomena' by the Copenhagen based artist collective; Sara Galbiati, Peter Helles Eriksen and Tobias Selnaes Markussen.
In 'Icons' Cortis & Sonderegger recreate iconic moments through in-depth research combined with a sense of play. Re-staging important moments in miniature in their studio, they then step back to reveal their working methods to expose the 'making of’ aspects of their craft. By including the debris of their constructions (paint, glue, cotton wool, etc.), the artists reveal an image within an image – leaving the viewer unbalanced between the remake of the past and the artist’s studio environment of the present. Their aim is to look for ways to ‘outwit and question the documentary aspect’ of photography and raise questions in the minds of their audience about the temporal nature of experience and memory.
'Phenomena' is the result of investigations by Sara Galbiati, Peter Helles Eriksen and Tobias Selnaes Markussen, into what lies behind different accounts of UFOs and extra terrestrial beings. Are these stories a series of commercially profitable tall tales, a mass delusion with social consequences, religious myth, or a physical phenomenon? In this presentation of their empirically collected materials, gathered during an extensive journey through Nevada, New Mexico and Arizona, 'Phenomena' encourages viewers to take a critical, but open minded look at complexities of their interactions.
A special installation and book signing event with the trio will take place during PHOTOFAIRS | San Francisco.
