ACTES D’AMOUR New Paintings and Drawings by ELIZA GRIFFITHS
“Through the body and its gestures, physiognomies and actions, [Eliza Griffiths] has been able to map a unique cartography of female desire” – Robert Enright
ELLEPHANT is pleased to present ACTES D’AMOUR, the newest series of large scale oil paintings and intimate drawings by Montreal- based artist Eliza Griffiths.
Griffiths ths is a painter whose work explores psychological and social themes using a cast of invented characters. The works exhibited in ACTES D’AMOUR feature ctive and speculative scenes of ambiguously nurturing, needy, con ictual and intimate relationships. The characters appear like a recurring cast of female and male actors from a B-movie director and are Frankesteinian psychic constructions that embody multiple states of mind and uid intersubjectivities. Informed by neuroscience and explorations in existential phenomenology, each scene is a suspended painting space mixed with existential melodrama, colour eld painting, narrative and non-verbal communication.
Griffiths’ paintings have been widely exhibited across Canada, as well as in the US, Europe, and the UK. Selected solo exhibitions include Mulherin + Pollard, NYC; FOFA Gallery, Montreal; WARC Gallery, Toronto; The Dunlop Gallery, Regina; Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo, NY; Mercer Union, Toronto; ARCO, Madrid; the Saidye Bronfman Centre Gallery, Montreal; and the Anna Leonowens Gallery, NSCAD, Halifax.
