While the origin story of the circle pre-dates written history, its first references were mathematical and mechanical, from calculating Pi to the invention of the wheel and soon other simple mechanics. Almost concurrently, the Ancient Greeks began associating the mathematical perfection of the circle to divinity and natural balance. The “perfect shape” continues to inspire artists, from Dallas’ Nic Nicosia who references the shape of a clock in his time-based drawings to Korean artist Chul-Hyun Ahn, whose use of the circle in his light installations evoke a journey into the unknown.
