Canto Blando is probably the most poetic and subtle exhibition of Elena Alonso so far, and although it keeps the runes that make her work exciting to both hemispheres of the brain, this exhibition appeals specifically to the sensitivity of the viewer.
In her last works we where surrounded by huge temples of strange combinations, now we enter an intimate and delicate sphere. As always in Alonso´s work a new landscape emerges inside a recognizable universe, a spiral where every new turn is able to amaze us without escaping the same orbital axis.
The poetry of Canto Blando is born in the darkness of the fireplace where one can feel the pass of time, the strangeness of home and the blinking presence of mild graphite coordinates that appear and disappear through random noise of dust.
There is a permanent ambiguity in a game of opposites, a contrast between hard and soft, natural and artificial, the technical and the artistic, in works done mainly in small formats with the use of new materials. The particularity of her drawings is shown in this exhibition through other techniques like the polishing, modeling or inlaying of different elements. There is an absence of work on paper, very interesting considering that Elena has revolutionized the discipline of drawing.
In Alonso`s there is always a curious tension between the neatness of her work, the beauty of the compositions and the uncertainty we face when we try to explain what is going on in the artwork.
Is precisely this association between harmony and paradox what produces a very peculiar atmosphere that we could define as tragic platonism.
Sometimes one has the feeling that the works of Elena point to an underlying universe that for some reason we have forgotten or that simply escapes our attention.
Its also interesting the fact that Elena states clearly that her main worry is the lack of affection with the world around us. The artworks of Elena are in this sense tools to renew and enrich our erotic relationship with the world.
¿What else can I say about a work that is already impeccable?
Maybe mention that this exhibition is in some sense a goldsmith self-communion before a
terrible battle with the colossal.
Simultaneous to our booth in ARCO Elena presents in February a site specific project in the Matadero hall Abierto X Obras where again we will see her facing large formats and psychological Titans
On every new exhibition Elena seems to say “Don’t get it wrong!” and she forces us to abandon any characterization that can make us able to reduce or define her approach.
And yet she never stops pointing to a same star, a place that is only reachable through her creations.
I hope this exhibition pleases and stimulates you as much it stimulates us.
A warm hug and we see you in Valverde.
