ETHAN COHEN GALLERY ANNOUNCES THE UNVEILING OF
“Re-thINK” by Lan Zhenghui
in association with salotto. Basel
from June 13th to August 26th 2017.
Ethan Cohen Fine Arts is proud to present ‘Re-thINK Ink’ in association with salotto., Basel, from June 13th to August 26th 2017, featuring experimental Chinese painter, Lan Zhenghui. This is the first inaugural solo exhibition at our new joint venture gallery space in Basel. Lan Zhenghui is one of China’s leading contemporary artists currently working in Beijing. Born in 1959 in Sichuan, China, he graduated from the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute in 1987. Lan is known for his monumental Abstract Expressionist black ink works which draw on ancient painting tradition. Just as Chinese literati artists favored personal artistic expression over literal representation, Lan’s gestural landscapes are non-representational yet capture his pursuit of individual emotional expression in their conception. The momentum of his landscapes’ bold, kinetic strokes expresses the beauty of the powerful forces of nature. Lan’s accomplishment with ink lies in his individualism as he fuses ancient and modern genres, the centuries-old visual language of brushstroke miming landscape colliding with pure motions of contemporary abstraction.
Lan is known for playing with subjectivity and the viewer’s need to anthropomorphize -- often teasing them with a barely discernible figure emerging or submerging amid the torrents or cloudscapes of ink. His largescale landscapes overwhelm and thrust the viewer into a space reminiscent of the Rorschach inkblot test used in psychological studies. He has said in the past that his artistic aesthetic is closely aligned with his philosophies and processes of thinking, though he allows his viewers agency, setting them on a quest for meaning and inviting them to make their own interpretations of his work.
