Nishiki Sugawara-Beda is a painter working primarily with Sumi-ink and water-based paints. Her multicultural experience through journeys and immigration from Japan to the United States as a young grown-up has developed her interests in exploring different cultures. To articulate the core of humanity, she investigates the connections amongst cultures both from the past and present, and she concentrates on following traditional Japanese activities back to their roots through her study.
Spirit of the Day at Morris Graves Museum of Art is an effort to highlight an oft-forgotten engagement in contemporary society—a deeper connection with their spirit. The paintings present the importance of this genuine commitment through mindfully cultivated marks on the surface. Sumi-ink produces subtle and nuanced shifts in values. It highlights a myriad of layers so that viewers may get lost in them and discover their core of shared humanity and the core of their humanity.
