Fabrik Projects presents Martin Cox's first exhibition at the gallery, Snow Drawings.
The exhibition is comprised of minimalist archival pigment print photographs from Martin Cox's most recent trip to northeast Iceland. Each image simultaneously captures the beauty and sheer power of the landscape, speaking to both the grandiosity and the vulnerability of the arctic natural world.
Aesthetically, absence dominates. A hint of mountain cliffs, a half-buried farmhouse, and isolated horses exist in the silence of near white, lending scale. Humanity's presence serves as a secondary notation only within the image.
Through Snow Drawings, Cox draws attention to increasingly rapid climate change in the region. In his words: "I am terrified that these places will be lost; erosion, land use, agriculture, industry, development … have seized control beyond our awareness."
Cox was born in the UK and currently lives in Los Angeles, CA. He works in both Los Angeles and Iceland. Cox has exhibited in galleries and museums internationally, including in Los Angeles, the UK, and Iceland, with subject matter regularly involving temporal landscapes or locations undergoing change. His artistic practice includes a collaborative conceptual project titled "Museum of Ennui," currently located in the downtown Los Angeles Arts District. He is also Artistic Director of the Gilsfjordur Art Residency in Iceland.
