Ferrin Contemporary presents
Poise: Peter Christian Johnson
at 1315 MASS MoCA Way in North Adams, Mass.
North Adams, Mass. – Ferrin Contemporary will present Poise: Peter Christian Johnson at their gallery at 1315 MASS MoCA Way. The exhibition will open November 18 and continue through December 31, 2016. The show will feature Johnson’s most recent ceramic sculpture.
POISE explores the tension between acts of labor and collapse, between precision and failure. It is a meditation on entropy that uses Gothic cathedrals as a foil to examine the dichotomy of beauty and loss.
For this exhibition, Johnson has created a series of highly organized architectural forms based on the floor plans of historic cathedrals. Over these elaborate base structures, he stretches a fluid skin of glaze. Under the strain of firing, the glaze is allowed to warp or collapse the framework. Using the kiln as an agent of disturbance, the forms are distorted and deconstructed under the weight of the glaze in an attempt to find grace and virtue in brokenness.
The exhibition will be presented November 18 through December 31, 2016 at Ferrin Contemporary located at 1315 MASS MoCA Way in North Adams. The Gallery is open Wednesday through Sunday, 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
