Sofia Borges Black Chalk and White Charcoal or the Myth of the Absent Matter 2 December 2016 – 22 January 2017
Foam presents the mysterious work of Brazilian artist Sofia Borges (Ribeirão Preto, 1984) in a new exhibition, Black Chalk and White Charcoal or the Myth of the Absent Matter. With a focus on capturing time in photography, ambiguity in image and language, and photography’s claim to truth, Borges intuitively investigates what an image is and what a photograph can be.
Borges photographs objects and their mirror images, early cave paintings of the first humans, details of dioramas and oil paintings in museums as well as duplicating existing images by re-photographing them. Myths and fables figure prominently in her work. Her first publication The Swamp (MACK) was published last spring. In it, she compares the reading of images with wandering through a muddy swamp. Borges endeavors to capture time and the connection between the past and the present through photography, thus posing the question of what time really is. Black Chalk and White Charcoal or the Myth of the Absent Matter invites us to think about how close we can come to the history of a photograph and to the reality that preceded it.
Sofia Borges studied Visual Arts at the University of São Paulo. She won the MACK First Book Award with her publication The Swamp. She has had solo exhibitions in France, Brazil, Mexico, Spain and Portugal.
Foam 3h is a project space where young artists and photographers are invited by Foam’s curators to present their first solo museum exhibition. They are challenged to experiment, surprise and push the limits of photography.
Opening The festive opening of Black Chalk and White Charcoal or the Myth of the Absent Matter, by Sofia Borges, is on Thursday 15 December from 5.30 pm onwards, in the presence of the artist.
