Felix Schramm, Duo

From December 1rst 2016 to January 13th 2017, Fondazione VOLUME! presents the work by Felix Schramm, DUO, curated by Davide Sarchioni and Fondazione Volume!.
Felix Schramm (Hamburg, 1970, lives and work in Dusseldorf) studied sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Florence and at the Dusseldorf Art Academy. He also spent a time in residency in Tokyo (2000) and at Villa Massimo in Rome (2008). Having exhibited in major international institutions such as the Hamburger Bahnhof Museum in Berlin, in 2006, the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco in 2007 and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris in 2009, the artist returns to Rome with a new project created dealing with the peculiarities of VOLUME! and the city.
The walls of the space in Via San Francesco di Sales lose their function of boundary, their continuity is interrupted and explode into fragments that intersect invading the visual horizon.
The dissolution of existing structures becomes construction of a scene from which the work takes body, in which each element is strongly controlled by the artist, starting from the project, to the end of the work itself.
Schramm puts the space under physical pressure and starting from the structure, the fundamental principle of his action, sets up a complex system in which architecture, painting and light come together in the attempt to create a total work of art.
The environment becomes sculpture through an investigation into the potential of matter that changes and bends, in a process that is both construction and opening, generating fragments and gaps, both of distortion, straining the orthogonal surfaces to the breaking point.
Schramm acts on the architecture, puts in communication real-space and illusory space, alters the perception thanks to the simultaneous presence of opposing and complementary entities: reality and fiction, empty and full, light and shadow.
The artist thinks his work by staging an environment reminiscent of the baroque machinery and smashed illusory: the work reveals the contents of the walls and connects the spaces, creating a non-canonical reality, made up of multiple perspectives and polycentric. Given the impossibility of a unique point of view, the viewer is forced to move continuously to investigate the space and the comparison with the changing sensations of attraction and repulsion, wonder and anxiety resulting from a strong emotional involvement.
