WALTER QUIRT: A SCIENCE OF LIFE
November 2 – December 31, 2017
Frederick Holmes And Company – Gallery of Modern & Contemporary Art
309 Occidental Avenue South
Seattle, WA 98104
An important retrospective of the artist’s career, in commemoration of his115th birthday and the publication of an exhibition catalogue of the same title.
This special two-month retrospective will be the largest exhibition of work by late seminal American Modernist, Walter Quirt (1902-1968) since 1980, and the most comprehensive ever produced by a commercial gallery.
Building upon the success of the Seattle gallery’s 2015 exhibition, WALTER QUIRT: REVOLUTIONS UNSEEN, which re-introduced the forgotten legacy of this remarkable artist to the public, WALTER QUIRT: A SCIENCE OF LIFE will delve more deeply into his historic contributions to the canon of American Modern Art, the artist’s post-New York period, encompassing the last twenty years of a forty year career. Included in the retrospective will be paintings and drawings dating from 1942 to 1967, in a variety of mediums and styles as he continued to theorize and experiment, each bearing the unmistakable imprimatur of Walter Quirt.
The accompanying 82 page exhibition catalogue, brilliantly illustrated with over fifty color plates, features essays which, through research conducted on the part of the gallery, reveal hitherto forgotten yet important moments in the artists career - from reviews of his first solo show with the Julien Levy Gallery in 1936 to data he collected in the Yucatan, Mexico, in support of the “Quirt Hypothesis” in 1966-67.
A special section is devoted to paintings included in a retrospective in 1960, WALTER QUIRT, produced by the American Federation of Arts (AFA) with a grant from the Ford Foundation of Arts and Humanities. These paintings, still bearing the original AFA museum stamps, will be prominently exhibited in the November show.
The exhibition and catalogue’s title is drawn from a statement Quirt made in a letter written in 1967 to his sister, Leila: “...art contains the principles for a science of life, that it always has...”
WALTER QUIRT: A SCIENCE OF LIFE opens November 2, 2017 with a private reception and opens to the public November 3rd thru December 31, 2017.
