Frestonian Gallery is delighted to present ‘Automaticals’ – a series of new paintings by Barry Reigate, alongside new textile, print and large-scale installation works by Marianne Thoermer.
In the practice of both artists the tension is evident between the instinctive & intuitive and the determined and skilful application of finely-honed technique. Reigate’s beautifully crafted air-brush paintings owe their composition to ‘unthinking doodles’.
Similarly, the forms of Thoermer’s extraordinary works are a confluence of the automatic (her sinewy, loose defining of each work’s shape and form), and the deliberate (her incredibly labour-intensive textile application and chemistry-kit experimentation with wax, foam and other materials).
Barry Reigate was born in 1971, London. He attended Camberwell College of Arts and then went on to study at Goldsmiths from 1995-97. In 1998 Reigate co-founded an independent artists’ gallery, The Kitchen. Reigate has had solo shows in London at Nang Gallery (2009), Paradise Row (2008 and 2011) and Trolley Gallery (2006), as well as recent solo shows in 2014 & 2017 in London and Amsterdam. He has undertaken high-profile commissions and collaborations with several designers, most notably Stella McCartney & Louis Vuitton. His group exhibitions include Rude Britannia: British Comic Art at Tate Gallery in 2010, and Newspeak: British Art Now at Saatchi Gallery in 2010, London Twelve at the City Gallery, Prague in 2014 and Nature Vs Nurture at FAMA Gallery, Verona, Italy.
Marriane Thoermer was born in 1987, Halle, Germany, and studied at the Berlin Weissensee School of Art, Germany and Chelsea College of Art and Design, London. She graduated from the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018. She has been the recipient of several major awards in the UK and Germany, including the 2010 Konrad-Adenauer Foundation award (Berlin) and the E Vincent Harris Award & Andre Dunoyer de Segonzav Award (both London, in 2017 & 18 respectively). Since graduating in 2018 her work has been included in several high profile group shows – Museum Rijswik, Netherlands; Elephant Space, London; TJ Boulting, London, and at Art Basel ’19 with Fiumano Clase Gallery. In 2019 she is included in the Royal Drawing School residency in Dumfries, Scotland.
