NATUREZAS IRREAIS - UNREAL NATURES
One of the most discussed topics today is the conscious and sustainable use of water. Last March, our capital (Brasilia) hosted an international event, the 8th World Water Forum, at which time relevant documents and agreements were signed to reinforce commitments of public agents to improve and increase water resources management in the world.
Water encompasses interdependent links of life promotion. It is a valuable heritage seriously threatened by human ignorance, which does not perceive the intimate relation of harmful actions and their direct consequences to natural and impermanent resources lacking in preservation.
An element that appears in the immaculate, transparent and clear, the water benefits us generously in everything that surrounds us, indispensable food to the body and spirit. Culturally, we may think that the waters transcend their value only as precious and indispensable mineral.
In mythical narratives, water is the scene of practices used in purification and regeneration, for the development of many reflections, whether religious, psychological or anthropological. Pollution of water compromises both the biological life and the psychic life of modern man.
Aligned with the urgent need for global awareness, photographer Paulo Penna has developed works whose agenda is established in the titration of water as contemporary artistic inspiration, a stimulus that gives direction and methodology to his recent productions.
The language of this photographic series is in the careful composition of fragments of snapshots constructed from the capture of visual impressions, created by the fleeting images that flow transported in the waters of various landscapes visited by the artist's senses. These frames reveal vibrant, volumetric and textualized surfaces that resemble free brushstrokes on dynamic planes that drive the observer's eye.
The thematic essence presents itself in a continuous transformation of forms, shades and contrasts, that the water shines like a platform in the service of multiple pictorial scenes. It is a natural mechanism of work, which offers the artist ample color spectra distributed in a particular "luminous vane".
The deconstructed appearance of the real world is one of the ramifications of the creative process, which seeks to emphasize the sensation of movement and depth. This series provokes a peculiar aesthetic of captures of images and their representations, through the elaboration of the negative-photographic rebound. These are enigmatic scenarios that reaffirm forms of Unreal Natures. The imaginary dissolves in the subjectivity and abstraction of figurative signs. Linked to a certain representational reference, the works emerge with inviting subtle subversions.
