Hilario Galguera Gallery is pleased to present Martin Eder’s first solo show in México, La vida es sueño, open to the public on Friday, September 23rd, 2016 during Gallery Weekend. The show consists on the artist’s most recent production made specially for the gallery.
This body of work explores the relation between dream, reality and all the states of consciousness in between. Pictorial representations that portray fantasy-like scenes of sleepy women dressed in armours who, despite appearing exhausted, remind us of the brave heroines of the Middle Ages. A self-portrait is part of this series - the artist rarely appears in his paintings - in which the allusion to the Deposition of Christ is evident because of the piece of wood he carries on his shoulders. The subjects on Eder’s paintings - still lives and portraits made with a classic technique - draw us back to other moments in the history of art, but the artist adds a touch of mysticism and delirium; he combines vanitas symbols with romantic landscapes, Christian iconography with the aesthetics of animated gifs, Albrecht Dürer with Starwars and El Greco with Game of Thrones; pseudo-religious and artificial scenes. Skulls, plastic flowers and undressed women with bright swords and axes are painted over glittering universes and apocalyptic skies.
La vida es sueño will remain open until November 26th, 2016.
Martin Eder was born in 1968 in Augsburg, Germany. He lives and works in Berlin.
