Galeria Nudo welcomes Barry Wolfryd back to SMA
• In two exhibitions, we showcase the ironic wit of this visual artist.
• The first covers recent pieces, including painting, sculpture, ceramics and objects.
• The other exhibits drawings and paintings from the 70s through the 90s, along with the work of Romero Tabuena.
On the one hand, the exhibition Tabuea y Wolfryd—A Meeting Point shows drawings and painting by Wolfryd from the 70s, 80s and 90s together with the work of the Philippine/San Miguel artist Romeo Tabuena (1921-2015). On the other hand, by means of portraits and landscapes, we show the overlaps and divergences between the two artists. The latter will be in the Romeo Tabuena Showroom, a project of research and study by the Galería Nudo dedicated to the work of Romeo Tabuena.
Coming from very different places and aesthetics—the Philippine Neo Realism of Tabuena and the Pop Art and Neo Expressionism of Wolfryd—both artists adopted Mexico as a second homeland where they shaped their careers. San Miguel de Allende was their meeting point in the late seventies. The city provided the Instituto Allende as a venue of training and experimentation. Moreover, the city’s powerful light, landscapes and cosmopolitan ambient were propitious for creation.
Tabuena devoted his artistic life to celebrating daily life in Mexico and in the Philippines in subjects captured during his long walks through the city.
Woldryd went to Mexico City where he joined the disruptive movements of the 80s. Now he returns to San Miguel de Allende as a mature artist with an international career—he has shown his work in New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, Berlin, Trieste and other cities—with a striking sense of humor. For the critic and curator Fernando Gálvez, “if there is an ironic painter in the national or binational scene, it is Wolfryd”.
Part of his most recent work is shown in the Galería Nudo, which specialises in contemporary art. Titled Barry Wolfryd: I Am Not Quite Sure What Time, it shows more than ten pieces of painting, sculpture, ceramics and objects.
Both exhibitions were designed as an art link, an experimental walk laid out in three venues: the Galería Nudo, the Showroom Romeo Tabuena and the Belmond Casa Sierra Nevada. The public is invited to enjoy the full walk. The work will be shown for a month.
