Since 1983, the work by Stephan Balkenhol (Frizlar, Alemania, 1957) has been characterized by the artist’s striving to re-ground figurative sculpture. He stood out against the prevailing tendencies is articulated through his very personal Technic. His carving ability is combine with a continuing investigation of the role the sculpture within the contemporary art production. Balkenhol carving soft wood of Alamo and Obeche, materials that remain clearly visible in the work through chisel marks, cracks or knots in the wood. The work process left marks through slabs or splinters that contrast with polished areas. In most of the sculptures uses a single block of wood which usually polychrome to delimit the robes and theme include a pedestal in sculptures totem types that remains the popular art and refer to medieval carving techniques.
His skill in size is combined with continued research of the role of Sculpture in artistic creation. The human figure is usually the driving force of his work, his characters generally anonymous man’s and women’s, whit faces without expression, can often been seen standing and ordinary dressed. Their postures and appearance are trivial and mysterious. There is not identifiable expression in there faces, resisting in this way all narrative interpretation, but whit a clear presence. Elements that in appearance can be so capricious as the position of the hands or the inclination of the heads, became the hidden keys that suggest the relation between the figures and with us and that deepen the link between the figures themselves and the spaces or locations that they occupy.
