After walking in rural landscapes, representing them with charcoal and watercolor , Gottfried Salzmann was absolutely fascinated by cities, multifaceted urban landscapes. Their verticality, the labyrinthine profusion of buildings, plunging views day and night , various reflections, the layers of graffiti or posters feed his works in recent years and have fueled the search for variety and interaction in the media he uses.
Recently, the inner serenity of Gothic cathedrals , with their majestic spans , provided a counterpoint to these urban views full of life. The narrow range of color, beautifully evokes the pure structure of space.
More recently, he takes us, like a crazy acrobat, in pic views from the top of skyscrapers , in a situation that we would not want to face ( hung by a harness in a helicopter over New York !) . The city becomes a graphical abstraction , a set of lines and grid .
And always with a subtle balance between extreme sharpness and blur, while maintaining rigor in construction, and high sensitivity in rendering.
This new exhibition of Gottfried SALZMANN allow us to see a coherent sum of work resuming his way in recent years , including cathedrals, as well as new features : folded watercolors and views absolutely amazing aplomb .
