The art of Antwerp based artist duo Carla Arocha (Caracas, Venezuela) and Stéphane Schraenen (Antwerp, Belgium) strongly relates to architecture, it is site specific and deals with optical and cultural phenomena. The artists use well – known forms and pare them down to their essence, redirect them in materially rich objects that are reminiscent of abstract and minimalist art. Every work by Arocha & Schraenen correlates differently with space, in which it is exposed and opens to another possible ways of interpretation. Therefore each exhibition by Arocha & Schraenen is a one- off experience and cannot be repeated.
Especially for ARCOmadrid 2016, in the booth of Galerie Isabella Czarnowska (Berlin) Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen have prepared an installation based on their newest work – “Column”. The arrangement of the installation creates a perception of ephemeral moment, which changes with every move of the viewer. The installation is completed by the series of geometrical drawings, which follow a certain pattern but they are never regular and appear only as a fragment.
Works by Carla Arocha & Stéphane Schraenen have been presented in individual and group exhibitions in cities such as: Guadalajara, Caracas, Miami, London, Portland, Berlin, Antwerp and Tokyo.
They can be found in private and public collections, among others in MoMA (New York, US), Art Institute of Chicago and Museum of Contemporary Art (Chicago, US), Walker Art Centre (Minneapolis, US), CAB De Burgos (Burgos, Spain), C.I.F.O (Miami, US), Fundación Banco Mercantil (Caracas, VEN) or in Grażyna Kulczyk Collection (Poland).
