FINE ART, MODERN & CONTEMPORARY
Galerie Kovacek & Zetter
September 9 to October 31, 2019
The gallery Kovacek & Zetter is celebrating its 20th anniversary with two top-class exhibitions and alongside two extensive publications.
One catalogue is dedicated to Austrian painting of the late 19th century, the time of Secessionism and painting of the interwar period. It’s a foray through Austrian art history with works by artist who are among the most significant of the country and strongly influenced the development of painting in Austria. Notable in this context are two women of the “Stimmungsimpressionismus” (literally mood or atmospheric impressionism) TINA BLAU and OLGA WISINGER-FLORIAN as well as GUSTAV KLIMT and the early expressionists EGON SCHIELE and OSKAR KOKOSCHKA. They are joined by masterpieces of the „Neuen Sachlichkeit“ (“Social Realism”) by ALFONS WALDE and two wonderful paintings by CARL MOLL, doyen of the Austrian artworld of the interwar period, as well as one of the rare and sought-after oil paintings by WERNER BERG. Last point in the catalogue and also the transition to the contemporary part of the exhibition, which has its own catalogue, are two egg-tempera works by MAX WEILER and a watercolour by ARIK BRAUER.
In the last few years the gallery has constantly been expanding its repertoire of contemporary art and is emphasizing this endeavour with extensive solo shows. In the anniversary exhibition the gallery presents important works by KIKI KOGELNIK – who was honoured by the gallery with a solo show last autumn and who is also recently gaining more and more attention also internationally. Moreover two works by ANDY WARHOL – the cofounder and most important agent of American Pop Art – are part of the exhibition. „Committee 2000“ is a good example for his new interpretation of still-life painting which traditionally shows the artist’s virtuosity by depicting ordinary objects of everyday life. Additional highlights are several works by artist of the „Gruppe St. Stephan“ (“Group St. Stephan”), WOLFGANG HOLLEGHA, JOSEF MIKL and MARKUS PRACHENSKY. MAX WEILER – the painter of wonderful “soul landscapes” who was honoured with a solo show in the gallery in 2016 – is represented with works from different creative periods. Several works by ERWIN WURM, the most important Austrian contemporary artist, who is also recognized internationally, are displayed alongside two extraordinary sculptures by TONY CRAGG. The gallery presents yet another exciting international position with „Study of Perspective in Glass“ by AI WEIEI.
On the basis of two works by SAM FRANCIS an interesting comparison with the Austrian positions of “Art Informel” is shown in the exhibition. The classification of local contemporary art in an international context is a major concern of the gallery.
