Galerie SOON is bringing the surrealist works of Chilean artist Pablo Benzo to Bern. The dreamlike, playful & at the same time mysterious paintings & cut-out paper cuts of the Berliner-by-choice bear witness to an intense, yet fresh & contemporary interpretation of Surrealism.
The works of the Chilean artist Pablo Benzo are characterized by the construction of confusing and unreal situations in which mysterious places, distorted furniture, sleepy plants and collections of interior objects mix with geometric forms.
In his paintings you can find mysterious and elegant figures dancing in slow motion, surrealistically intertwined plants and cubistically abstract forms reminiscent of flowers. Placed on monochrome backgrounds, his motifs seem to hang in a mysterious, dreamlike place, distant from time and space. This impression is further reinforced by the frequent absence of a defined perspective in the composition. The lack of perspective prevents a clear allocation to a room, but at the same time underlines the enigmatic character of his artworks.
He uses his colour palette, carefully developed over the years, in harmonious combination with the delicate forms found in his oil paintings, cut-out collages and sculptures. Benzo thus creates timeless works of art - entirely committed to the surrealist tradition, yet interpreted by him in a fresh and contemporary way.
Pablo Benzo, born in Santiago, Chile, in 1982, completed his graphic design studies at the University of Chile in 2009. Since 2013 he has lived and worked as a painter, graphic artist and illustrator in Berlin, from where he participated in several group shows in Germany, Europe, the USA and Chile. "Dissolution of all enchantments" at Galerie SOON is his first solo exhibition in Switzerland.
