Global information floods captured in oil
Serge Nyfeler processes, reflects and links the world and the never-ending flood of information of our time in his works. After the summer break, SOON Gallery opens the fourth solo exhibition "Where people with nothing are looking for something" with the Bernese artist's colourful oil paintings. Inspired by the media flood of current events, the paintings capture the moods and events in a picturesque way and can be seen in the SOON Gallery in Berne from September 6.
Every day the media provide us with a huge amount of information about current world events - from terrible catastrophe reports to banal news about some celebrity. The Bernese artist Serge Nyfeler is inspired by this flood of media and captures the moods and events in his paintings.
Serge Nyfeler packages, processes, reflects and links the world and the never-ending flood of information of our time in his works. The oil paintings also contain quotations of other artists and works, entangled in a global, contemporary view.
For over thirty years now, the artist Serge Nyfeler has been using a brush. His works still arise from the need to better understand and present something specific, a situation. Thematically this can be many things, but everything revolves around his favourite theme: (s)an interpretation of the time in which we live.
Always looking for motifs, over the years he has amassed much inspiration in the form of sketches, notes, collected images from the media or from the street. This leads to representations in which the figures are always in the context of their surroundings and are indications for current events.
By combining abstract and figurative pictorial elements, Serge creates peculiar sceneries between which connections can only be guessed. His humorous and critical perspectives and perceptions can be found in partly absurd pictorial compositions, but always leave the viewer room for his own interpretation.
Influenced by a colourful palette and unmistakably expressive stylistic elements, Serge's paintings bear witness to an intensive confrontation between time-related content and artistic creation.
Serge Nyfeler, born in Samedan in 1963, devoted himself exclusively to painting after completing his graphic design training in 1984. In his 20s and 30s, most of which he spent in France and Bern, Serge worked as a stage designer, interior architect and above all as a painter. Since 2002 Serge lives and works in Bern and Justiniac (F).
