Artist WES21 lets worlds collide
With his overwhelming creativity and his distinctive, very own pictorial language artist and former sprayer Remo Lienhard / WES 21 has long since made a name for himself beyond the national borders. The young Swiss artist is internationally known in the mural scene and has had exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Berlin or Moscow. Working like a window into a parallel universe his canvases with their narrative content let unusual worlds collide. His newest surrealistic works will be on display as of April 6, 2017 at his by now third solo-exhibition at Galerie SOON in Zürich.
Remo Lienhard / WES 21 has an ability to astonish the viewer with his motifs and the incredible precision in the execution of his works. With his strong sense for harmonious compositions – paired with a unique imagination – he makes surreal creatures come alive and impossible constructs real.
The only 28-year old Lienhard is therefore not only in Switzerland said to be one of the most emerging upcoming artists. With his big-scale murals in New York, Berlin, Budapest or Milano he gained attention not least due to the much discussed work “Fressen und gefressen werden” at the legendary 5 Pointz Building in New York which has been shown on BBC as well as in a New York Times online photo series. His canvases have been shown in group-shows in New York, San Francisco, Aarlborg, at the Biennal Moscow or in Berlin.
Lienhard’s paintings, designed with the rare combination of spray paint, acryl and oil, delight collectors all over the world. In the well-known manner they show concrete motifs borrowed from the natural and industrial world both, which WES merges to fantastic subjects. Frequently characterised by ambiguities and opposite dimensions, his realistic depictions of often unreal, hybrid creatures and landscapes captivate the viewer with a high detail precision and the harmonious visual composition and colour palette. Executed with almost scientific accuracy, the artist shows himself as a sharp-eyed observer who is able to analyse and study his environment as well as reflect critically about it. Working like a window into a parallel universe his canvases with their narrative content let unusual worlds collide.
The solo-exhibition When Worlds Collide shows the newest works by the artist. Born 1989, Remo Lienhard grew up in Biel, Switzerland, experimenting with the spray can at a very young age and soon gaining a strong reputation in the scene. In 2010 he completed training at the College of Design in Biel and has since then applied himself to producing art and working on various design jobs, including for music festivals. His live paintings have been an attraction at a number of different events. As part of the "Schwarzmaler" collective he produces visual projects in the graffiti scene. Remo lives and works in Biel, Switzerland.
