Galerie The artist is pleased to present “Aliens”, a series of original abstract paintings by Amercian artist Lenny Nobrega.
Nobrega’s quiet and contemplative oil painting stars colorful and emotionally engaging characters. The figures express the light pleasure reminding us, the viewers, of some of Matisse's works.
The malicious, humorous titles denote the artist's quick-wittedness and imagination. The pointillist background inspired by Van Gogh or Seurat’s technique, the blending and the contrasting of Fauve colors in this full scale artwork shows Nobrega's mastery of the expressive language of color.
Nobrega uses the spatial ambiguity to explore one of the key issues in modern painting: the conflict between the illusion of depth and the acknowledgment of the flatness of the canvas.
The artist reverses these figure ground relationship. He makes the figure out of the ground (the canvas) and makes the ground out of the figure (paint on top). When seen in person, the recognition of this does finally destroy the illusion… And Nobrega’s art faboulously leaves us enchanted and moved…
Born in 1948 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Lenny Nobrega, now a Melbourne resident and retired architect, showed an affinity for art, color coordination and design at an early age.
Inspired by his dreams, Nobrega’s paintings depict abstract alien landscapes and extraterrestrials in bold colors. The artist sketches the images from his dreams after waking.
Though Nobrega has experienced vivid dreams for decades, he felt inclined to explore them more seriously after retiring.
"Oil painting has always been my passion. I have a gift of seeing an image when sleeping. I see images that have great depth with stars in blue skies, as if floating in space. They appear in very celestial images. The images are so vivid that after I wake I still see them for 5 to 7 minutes. This gives me time to sketch the image before it disappears... because they appear to be floating in space, I've given my paintings the names of planets and moons or planets.
I am now at a point where I have time to develop the many visions that come to me in my dreams and will work to become a serious artist. I sincerely hope art patrons will enjoy my art."
Galerie The Artist was founded out of passion by an artist herself. Its plan is to make art accessible to all by organizing solo exhibitions and art fairs and to be able to continue the tradition of presenting emerging and established artists while focusing on developing the community around them.
In addition, Galerie The Artist is developing the “Art for Healing Project” in partnership with The Rotary International Foundation. The gallery will dedicate some of its proceeds to raise money and actively develop Art Therapy centers, buying equipment and utensils, trying to help overcome the difficulties and atrocities the children have witnessed through the Power of Art, and help nurture the hearts and souls of little artists within hospitals or refugee camps.
Galerie The Artist is proud to present an eclectic variety of international artists.
