Leif Trenkler is one of the forerunners of New Figuration in Germany, and attended both the Städel Academy as well as the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His art can be understood as the continuous merging of the most diverse elements, as “intergradient Elements”, which skilfully blend together to produce a large coherent whole. Thus he makes clear reference to the art-historical tradition by drawing on various painters of Florentine Mannerism, the Venetian Renaissance, Baroque art and even Abstract Expressionism. However, instead of simply copying the Old Masters he skilfully transposes their styles into the age of media and in doing so creates an aesthetic of the club and lounge culture of our times.
The most recent works display a snapshot of everyday life, in which human beings play only a subordinate role. They usually appear only sketchily in the background or as figures seen from behind. Natural and man-made spaces, flora and fauna are the key players in these artistic events. In doing so the artist limits himself not only to motifs from his homeland, but also probes exotic realms. The powerful exaggerated colouring results in a self-contained dramatic composition. Further important components are the interplay of light and shadows, as well as the reflections in water. The brushwork varies, but is usually only discreetly visible. This is also true of the marked outlines.
The multi-layered art of Leif Trenkler delights the eye of the viewer and at the same time blurs the boundaries of space and time. The viewer is taken by the artist on a poetic-fantastic journey into a world between dreams and reality. An unforgettable adventure awaits you …
