The pieces presented, both oil paintings and painted photographs were inspired by the scenery of Formentera Island. In addition to the architecture and its expressions of light, an important motif for the artist, Taulé also depicts imaginary doors which represent ‘a threshold, a portal which, from the visible, leads to the invisible’. Renowned for his chiaroscuros, Taulé’s game is played between light and shadows in highly structured spaces, opening up entirely new perspectives. This presentation follows the recent exhibition of Insula Lux at the Chanel Nexus Hall, Tokyo. After the multi-institution exhibition Interior(2016) in Paris, joined by friends Christian Boltanksi, Jean-Claude Carrière, Sarah Moon and Erro, Insula Lux marks a new stage in Taulé'work. Darkness fades; the light arrives and catches the eye, illuminating scenes that are sometimes populated by individuals—isolated and lonely—but most often empty of any presence.
