Per Bak Jensen: Dagslys/Daylight
28 October–17 December 2016
Galleri Bo Bjerggaard, west-facing exhibition space
On Friday 28 October, Galleri Bo Bjerggaard opens its third solo exhibition with the Danish artist Per Bak Jensen (b. 1949). The exhibition Daylight presents thirteen new photographs, which, in all their quietude, tell an existential story about man – everything and nothing.
As Helle Brøns writes in the accompanying catalogue:
Per Bak Jensen’s works point to something central in photography as a medium, which has to do with the time that is contained in his pictures. It is not the arrested time and essential moment of snapshot photography that is captured here, but rather a slowness and contemplation. Much time has clearly gone into selecting and exploring the motif, finding the appropriate arrangement of the picture, and setting the camera to release just the right amount of light into its dark interior. The time that the photographer has invested must be ‘given back’ by the viewer when contemplating the pictures.
In a Scandinavian context, Per Bak Jensen is a pioneer in his field, who has helped elevate the status of photography in the art world to the same level as painting and sculpture. He was the first person to enter the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts with photography as his primary medium, and from 1986–2009, he was also a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Internationally, his work is represented in major collections at the Bibliothéque Nationale in Paris and at MoMA, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and here in Denmark at ARKEN and Louisiana Museum of Modern Art. In 2015, first Sorø Kunstmuseum and then Kunstmuseet i Tønder hosted a major retrospective exhibition of the artist's work.
All are welcome to attend the vernissage on Friday 28 October from 16–18, when we will also be opening the exhibition Night Vision by Per Inge Bjørlo in the east-facing exhibition space. For further information and to order pictorial material on the works, please contact the gallery.
