Carlos Estrada-Vega Explores Color & The Chihuahuan Desert In His Solo Show at galleryFRITZ
SANTA FE, NEW MEXICO [April 16, 2019] - Carlos Estrada-Vega’s introspective upcoming show The Chihuahuan Desert, My Land, My Inspiration is a colorful transliteration of his unique perception of the world, opening June 29, 2019 and running through July 22, 2019, at galleryFRITZ, a cutting-edge contemporary art space in Santa Fe, NM.
In a subtle departure from his previous work, this current show is more playful and less controlled as a result of Mr. Estrada-Vega’s changing personal awareness. “I am doing the same work but somehow it looks to me so much more free of me than before, yet I feel connected,” he remarks.
This body of new work pulls inspiration from the vibrant colors and playful light of his native land — the Chihuahuan Desert. Mr. Estrada-Vega juxtaposes these light-hearted depictions with the intense discipline and intuition his process commands. He purposely touches each cube repeatedly to infuse as much intimate human-ness as possible into the completed work. The pieces themselves are derived from the earth and embody abstract renderings of the land that inspires him. Mr. Estrada-Vega binds oil and acrylic based pigments with limestone dust thus transforming his organic medium into individual busts of color and emotion.
“I intend to assemble labor, color, saturation, sensory stimulation and beauty into a simple composition that, hopefully, will invite the viewer into a moment of silence and solitude,” states Mr. Estrada-Vega.
An opening reception for The Chihuahuan Desert, My Land, My Inspiration will be June 29, 2019; 5-7 PM at galleryFRITZ, located at 540 S. Guadalupe Street, Santa Fe, NM 87501.

About Carlos Estrada-Vega
Originally from Mexico and currently living in New Mexico, Carlos Estrada-Vega continues to explore the relationships between color and the geometric shapes. His paintings consist of small wooden shapes typically no larger than one to three inches. These units are then individually painted with the artist’s proprietary mixture of oil, limestone dust, and pigment. Magnets are inserted into the backs of each of these “mini-paintings,” which allows them to be attached to a large, unifying steel plate. Once assembled, these orchestrations of color - in some cases incorporating thousands of tiny shapes - become “organic” cohesive grids, playfully inducing sensory overload, satiating you with the pure joy of truly experiencing color.
