In this body of work Wegwerth explores tension between the natural and the artificial, seeking creative intervention whilst meddling with the unexpected and the controllable.
Named after the origin of the wood used, BLANKENAU takes what is naturally grown and allows it to inform the shape of the structure. By whittling down and carving each branch by hand, Wegwerth takes careful consideration into every organic curve and grown crotch in the wood. The free-form wooden structure with a rasped, burned and shellac finished surface provides a visually striking contrast to the technical quality of the glass.
BLANKENAU has its own organic and complex logic, yet it is also shaped by human action. With an open approach and use of various constructive elements, Wegwerth discovers and transforms new connections. By challenging the form, he rebuilds, redefines and finally uncovers the purpose of each piece.
