Gallery On The Move is proud to present "Compilation..." in collaboration with the National Museum of History in Tirana. 'Compilation...' consists in a screening of films by Maria Thereza Alves & Jimmie Durham, and Francisco Camacho Herrera. "Compilation of 13" by Maria Thereza Alves & Jimmie Durham is a series of short videos (shot by Alves) that show Durham engaged in a wide variety of actions involving stones and rocks, a material the artist has returned to again and again. As a material used for making buildings, monuments, sculptures and tools across cultures, stone is richly metaphoric, simultaneously generic and symbolic. Though there is a measure of violence in these vignettes, they are also sardonic and funny, so many games of rock-paper-scissors in which the rock always wins. Francisco Camacho Herrera's video "Parallel Narratives" (2015-17) imagines that Chinese sailors crossed the Pacific Ocean and had contact with American societies before the arrival of the Spanish. In this workshop, participants are invited to consider how memory plays a part in the recording of history. Presented by the artist over the opening weekend of the 21st Biennale of Sydney, the workshop continues monthly during the Biennale, resulting in a collection of participant contributions.
